You’ll Keep Contesting on Social Media, Not in Nigeria — Wike Tells Obi

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has criticised former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, saying he will “keep contesting as president on social media, but never as President of Nigeria.”
Wike made the remark on Thursday during the inauguration of newly constructed roads in the Mabushi District of Abuja. His comments came in response to Obi’s recent criticism of the poor state of public schools in the FCT.
Obi had, during a visit to LEA Primary School, Kapwa, on Wednesday, described the school’s condition as “a national disgrace” and proof of Nigeria’s “empty commitment to education,” lamenting the lack of basic facilities like chairs and toilets.
Reacting, Wike accused Obi of using emotional public appearances for political gain, saying, “I hear one of the social media presidential candidates went to a local authority school and said the government has abandoned public schools. His name is Mr Peter Obi. It’s not everything you play politics with.”
He also questioned Obi’s record as governor of Anambra State, claiming he failed to complete key projects during his eight-year tenure.
“Peter Obi, you were governor for eight years. If you had finished all the jobs then, no one would still be talking about developing Anambra today. And why did you have problems with your successor?” he asked.
Wike further compared his performance as FCT Minister to Obi’s record as governor.
“We’ve been in office for just two years, not even four, yet compare what we’ve done in the FCT to your eight years in Anambra. Can you really say you love this country or Ndi Anambra? Certainly not,” he said.
The minister added that Obi lacked the leadership capacity to govern a country as large as Nigeria.
“You’ll continue contesting for president on social media, not in Nigeria. You couldn’t even manage a small political party, yet you want to manage a country of over 200 million people. That office isn’t available for people like you,” Wike declared.
