Tinubu Undermining Nigeria’s Democracy – Atiku
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has accused President Bola Tinubu of undermining Nigeria’s democracy, alleging that recent political developments are part of a wider plan to weaken opposition forces ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a post on X, Atiku welcomed the reopening of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s previously sealed office but condemned the earlier closure, which he said deprived Kogi Central constituents of representation. He linked the incident to the political crisis in Rivers State, where Governor Siminalayi Fubara and some members of the state House of Assembly were suspended, describing the move as unconstitutional.
Atiku further accused the Tinubu-led All Progressives Congress (APC) of weaponising state institutions against opposition figures. He referenced reports of harassment in Kaduna and Katsina, including an alleged attack on former Kaduna Governor Nasir el-Rufai at an African Democratic Congress event.
“These are deliberate markers of the Tinubu administration’s strategy as 2027 approaches — to subvert our hard-earned democracy and compromise the will of the people at any cost,” Atiku wrote.
The PDP chieftain argued that the pattern of intimidation reflects a broader attempt to silence dissent and shrink Nigeria’s democratic space. He warned that, if left unchecked, these actions could roll back the gains made since the country’s return to civilian rule in 1999.
Atiku, who was Tinubu’s main challenger in the disputed 2023 presidential election, reiterated his commitment to lawful resistance against what he described as creeping authoritarianism.

“Let it be clear: we shall do everything legitimate and within the bounds of the law to protect our democracy, defend the people’s mandate, and rescue our nation from the grip of authoritarianism,” he said.
Atiku and Labour Party candidate Peter Obi, who also contested the 2023 election, have previously hinted at forming a coalition to challenge the APC in 2027.
