Super Eagles Keep World Cup Dreams Alive With Narrow Win Over Lesotho

Nigeria’s Super Eagles on Thursday revived their hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup to be held across North America with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Lesotho.

Head coach Eric Chelle named a strong starting lineup, welcoming back Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen and Al-Kholood defender William Troost-Ekong.

Moses Simon set the early tone for Nigeria in the 6th minute with a promising run from the right flank, but Lesotho’s defence remained compact and disciplined. Despite dominating possession, the Eagles struggled with poor passing and limited space, as the Crocodiles’ five-man backline kept them at bay.

Osimhen nearly broke the deadlock in the 38th minute after outmuscling his marker to meet a cross from the right, but Lesotho goalkeeper Sekhoane pulled off an impressive save to keep the score level.

The first half ended goalless, but Nigeria maintained their momentum after the restart. Their persistence paid off in the 53rd minute when Motlomelo Mkwanazi handled the ball inside the box following a shot from Simon. Captain William Troost-Ekong calmly converted the resulting penalty, sending the keeper the wrong way.

The Super Eagles extended their lead in the 80th minute when Osimhen played a clever pass into the box for Akor Adams, who controlled neatly before firing past Sekhoane to make it 2-0.

Lesotho, however, pulled one back late in the game after a defensive lapse from Nigeria. A corner kick fell kindly to Hlompho Kalake, who struck the ball beyond goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali to reduce the deficit.
