Sowore Opposes Zoning, Urges Merit-Based Presidential Contest in 2027

Omoyele Sowore, presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2019 and 2023 elections, has rejected the idea of a rotational presidency in Nigeria, calling instead for an open and merit-driven contest ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s breakfast show on Tuesday, Sowore argued that the focus should be on a candidate’s competence and vision, not their region of origin.
“If we can get a president who can govern Nigeria effectively, I don’t care where that person comes from,” he said.
The human rights activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters criticized zoning as a system that marginalizes capable individuals based on ethnic or regional lines. He maintained that Nigerians deserve the best leadership regardless of geopolitical considerations.
“That’s the true essence of our federation—every federating unit should have equal opportunity. But zoning, as it is practiced, actually undermines that principle,” he said.
Sowore also questioned the rationale behind regional zoning, highlighting the internal complexities within regions. “Zoning to the north doesn’t represent all northerners. And in the south, it’s not just about Yoruba or Igbo—it’s more diverse than that. It just doesn’t make sense,” he added.
He warned that zoning could lead to the emergence of unqualified leaders. “Handing the presidency to the worst character in the name of zoning won’t help this country,” he said.

Advocating for a merit-based political system, Sowore urged that all aspirants be allowed to contest freely and be judged on their credentials, ideas, and integrity.
“Let everyone come forward with their agenda. Let them speak to the people, and let voters assess their character and experience before making a choice,” he said.
Sowore, known for his advocacy for systemic change and public accountability, continues to challenge both the ruling and opposition parties on critical national issues.
