Peter Obi Reaffirms One-Term Pledge, Emphasizes Accountability in Leadership

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has reiterated his commitment to serving only one term of four years if elected president, stressing that genuine leadership is measured by impact, not tenure.
In a statement shared via his X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday, Obi cited historical leaders like Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, and Nelson Mandela—figures who, despite short time in office, left lasting legacies through purposeful and principled leadership.
“Abraham Lincoln served just four years but remains one of the most respected American presidents. John F. Kennedy didn’t complete a full term, yet his ideals continue to inspire. Nelson Mandela, despite strong public pressure, chose to serve only one term, demonstrating that leadership is about service, not self-interest,” Obi wrote.
He added that in many African nations, extended stays in office often lead to the abuse of power. According to him, “True statesmanship is defined by accountable service, not the length of time in power.”
Obi reaffirmed: “If elected President, I will serve only one term. That commitment is final and non-negotiable.”
He dismissed accusations that his one-term vow was a mere political stunt, describing it instead as a deeply held principle backed by his track record as former Anambra State governor, where he said he delivered on his promises without deviation.
Responding to critics who mocked or doubted his one-term stance—with some suggesting psychiatric evaluation—Obi said their skepticism stems from a political culture where promises are routinely broken.
“They judge me by their own standards. But I’m not that kind of politician,” he said.
Obi emphasized the importance of restoring public trust in government and maintained that a focused administration could deliver transformative results within the constitutionally allowed four-year term.

“Forty-eight months is enough for any leader who is ready and prepared to lead with purpose. I will not stay a day longer,” he declared.
If elected, Obi listed his priorities as reforming governance, tackling insecurity through better resource allocation, improving healthcare and education, empowering small businesses, and transitioning Nigeria into a productive economy anchored on agriculture, manufacturing, and technology.
“These are not fanciful ideas—they are practical, achievable goals within a single term,” he said.
He concluded by affirming that his one-term pledge is a solemn promise rooted in principle, not ambition.
