Oyo Government Recruits Over 12,000 Teachers in Six Years — TESCOM

The Oyo State Government has more than doubled the number of staff in public secondary schools under Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration, growing from 13,730 in 2019 to 26,436 within six years.
Chairperson of the Post Primary Schools’ Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), Mrs. Olubukola Oladipo, disclosed this on Wednesday at the Omituntun 2.0 Inter-Ministerial Briefing held at the Governor’s Office in Ibadan.
A statement by the governor’s Special Adviser on Media, Sulaimon Olanrewaju, revealed that 10,500 teaching and non-teaching personnel were employed during Makinde’s second term alone.
Oladipo noted that TESCOM created four new educational zones, bringing the total to ten — Ibadan Zones I to IV, Oyo, Ogbomoso, Kishi, Saki, Eruwa, and Iseyin — to improve administrative efficiency. A Directorate of Pension and Post Services was also established to cater to TESCOM retirees.
“In 2024 and early 2025, we recruited 7,500 teaching and 3,000 non-teaching staff to boost students’ performance in internal and external examinations,” she said. “This also created job opportunities for young people and improved their living standards.”
She added that TESCOM had conducted promotion exercises for eligible officers from 2017 to 2024 and appointed ten Tutors-General/Permanent Secretaries along with one Permanent Secretary at the headquarters to enhance monitoring and supervision.

According to Oladipo, the state government has been consistent in disbursing running grants to 695 public secondary schools and has introduced an e-payment system to simplify access to vehicle loans for staff across the ten zones.
She further revealed that plans are in motion to train all 695 school principals on modern school management practices aligned with 21st-century education standards.
