“Our best wasn’t enough,” Nwabali reflects after DR Congo defeat
Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has issued an apology to Nigerians following the team’s heartbreaking loss in the 2026 World Cup playoff final against DR Congo. Nwabali expressed regret, saying the team “gave everything for the badge” but ultimately fell short of securing a World Cup spot.
Nigeria’s campaign came to an end after a 4–3 defeat on penalties, following a 1–1 draw after 120 minutes of regulation and extra time. Despite Nwabali saving two penalties during the shootout, misses from Calvin Bassey, Moses Simon, and Semi Ajayi proved costly.
The match’s decisive moment came when DR Congo captain Chancel Mbemba calmly converted the final penalty to send his team to the intercontinental playoffs.
After the game, Nwabali took to Instagram to share his thoughts, noting that as a former fan and now player, he fully understands the pain of disappointment. He admitted that the team’s “best wasn’t enough” and emphasized that the players “take full responsibility” for the outcome.
