OAU Confirms Death of Medical Student Who Took Own Life After Repeating Exam Twice

The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, has confirmed the death of a Part Two medical student, Ajibola Ibitayo, who reportedly committed suicide after failing his examinations for the second time.

 

In a statement issued on Thursday, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Abiodun Olarewaju, disclosed that Ibitayo, with matriculation number DEN/2021/023, was required to repeat Part Two for another academic year after the release of results on Wednesday.

 

Olarewaju explained that the late student had already been repeating the same class during the previous session. He reportedly ended his life by injecting himself at his parents’ residence in Ejigbo, Osun State.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Simeon Bamire, described the incident as a tragedy that has plunged the entire university community into mourning. He urged parents to help their children understand that academic setbacks are temporary and should be seen as opportunities for redirection rather than reasons for despair.

Bamire encouraged students to embrace failure as part of the journey to success and prayed for strength for the bereaved family, the Faculty of Dentistry, the College of Health Sciences, and the university community to bear the loss.
