Nigeria Can Still Qualify for World Cup — Mikel Obi

Former Super Eagles captain, John Mikel Obi, has expressed confidence that Nigeria can still qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, urging the players to take full responsibility and fight for national pride.
With two matches remaining, the Eagles are currently third in Group C, trailing leaders South Africa and Benin Republic by three points. They face Lesotho in Polokwane on Friday before hosting Benin Republic in Uyo for their final qualifier.
Speaking on The ObiOne Podcast, the former Chelsea midfielder admitted that Nigeria’s qualification hopes are “hanging by a thread” but insisted it is still possible if the team plays with unity, hunger, and determination.
“It would be a crime—an absolute crime—if Nigeria fails to qualify for the World Cup again,” Mikel said. “We love football too much as a nation. The players must understand that our fate is in their hands. They need to win these two games—no excuses.”
Mikel, who captained Nigeria at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, revealed he still maintains contact with several current squad members and has urged them to show leadership both on and off the pitch.
“At this point, all off-field issues must be put aside. It’s about the players now—they must take responsibility and deliver. Nigerians are counting on them,” he stated.
“Yes, there are problems within the NFF, but that’s secondary for now. Win your games first; everything else can be addressed later.”
Drawing from his experience as captain, Mikel advised senior players like Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Alex Iwobi, Moses Simon, and Victor Boniface to replicate the discipline and togetherness of previous successful squads.
“When I led the team, responsibility came first. You put your frustrations aside and focus on the task. The players should have a team meeting, speak openly, and rally around each other. They still have a real chance—they just need to believe,” he said.
Despite Nigeria’s shaky qualifying run, which includes five draws in eight matches, the 37-year-old remains optimistic about the team’s quality.

“We have top players in every department—strong defence, balanced midfield, and one of the best attacking lines in Africa. What’s missing is the mentality, the hunger, and the focus to finish strong,” he added.
The Super Eagles’ training camp in Polokwane opened on Monday ahead of Friday’s clash with Lesotho at the Peter Mokaba Stadium. Wins against Lesotho and Benin Republic could see Nigeria secure qualification and avoid missing the World Cup for a second consecutive time.
