Modakeke Marks 40 Years of Akoraye Day with Call for Peace, Launch of Development Fund
The 40th Akoraye Day Planning Committee has called for calm and peaceful conduct ahead of this year’s celebration in Modakeke, Osun State.
The appeal was made on Monday during a press conference in Modakeke, addressed by the Committee Chairman, Prince Tunmbi Toriola.
9jaReporters obtained that Prince Toriola explained that the call for peace is crucial to ensure a smooth and successful celebration of the milestone 40th edition. He highlighted that Akoraye Day has brought Modakeke residents together for four decades, serving as a platform for cultural preservation and community development.
Tracing the event’s history, he noted that it was first celebrated as Modakeke Akoraye Day in 1984 and has since become a symbol of resilience and progress for the community. Over the years, the celebration has played a key role in the development of Modakeke.
He listed major projects funded through Akoraye Day, including schools, courts, markets, a modern palace, a police station, and the Modakeke Town Hall. Other notable achievements include Ogunsua Radio 97.7 FM, the civic centre, motor parks, electricity infrastructure, and other essential community facilities.
Prince Toriola also unveiled the official eight-day programme, scheduled to run from December 6 to December 13. Planned activities include traditional rites, thanksgiving services, competitions, the commissioning of a shopping plaza, a fitness walk, medical outreach, an award night, and a grand finale. The final day will also feature the launch of a one-billion-naira community development fund.
He made a strong appeal for peace throughout Modakeke and neighboring areas during the celebration, stressing that development cannot thrive in an atmosphere of unrest. He urged residents to cooperate with security agencies and uphold unity and mutual respect.
Additionally, Prince Toriola appealed to the Osun State Government to address infrastructural challenges in Modakeke, particularly poor roads, inadequate water supply, drainage issues, and security concerns. He highlighted the incomplete bridge at the Old NEPA Area as a priority project.
“Our roads, especially the bridge at Old NEPA Area, are a pressing concern,” he said. “Though partially repaired, the bridge remains incomplete and is deteriorating. Development is a shared responsibility. Modakeke has always shown commitment to self-help initiatives, but government support is essential to strengthen local efforts. It is crucial that the state government partners with us to uplift the infrastructure of this historic community.”
Prince Toriola encouraged all Modakeke indigenes to actively participate in the festivities and contribute to the development fund.
