LASU VC Appeals to Staff to End Strike, Resume Duties Monday

The Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, has appealed to striking staff members to end their two-week industrial action and return to work on Monday, August 11, 2025.

In an open letter to the university community on Saturday, the VC acknowledged the concerns that led to the strike and assured staff of her continued commitment to their welfare. She noted that the Joint Action Committee’s leadership and the university management had worked closely to secure several benefits for staff since she assumed office in September 2021.

According to her, these achievements include the payment of a 100% end-of-year bonus, prompt promotions, priority employment and admission opportunities for qualified relatives, timely salary payments, amnesty promotions for long-delayed cases, full payment of Earned Academic Allowances, clearing of cooperative dues, expanded training opportunities, retroactive qualification approvals, implementation of the recent 25%/35% federal salary increase, and removal of administrative ceilings on career progression.

Prof. Olatunji-Bello stated that while the state government’s latest offers may not meet every expectation, they represent progress in negotiations. She urged staff to accept the proposals and resume academic and administrative activities, warning that prolonged closure could harm the university’s community, reputation, and students’ progress.

“We are not on opposite sides. We are partners, bound by the same vision of a Lagos State University that values its staff and serves its students with pride,” she said. “Let us return to our duty posts, not as a concession, but as a demonstration of our belief in each other and in our collective strength.”

The industrial action, which began two weeks ago, had brought academic activities at LASU to a halt.
