Lagos records 1,675 fire, road disasters in 2024
The Lagos State Government has revealed that a total of 1,675 disasters involving fire, building collapse, road, boat mishaps, among others occurred in the state between January 1-December 31, 2024, with Alimosho Local Government Area, LGA, topping the list of occurrence.
The figures were contained in the 2024 Annual Data Analysis, released by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, signed by its Permanent Secretary, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu.
Oke-Osanyitolu stated that the agency acted in accordance with its statutory responsibilities of coordinating emergency/disaster response with a mandate to respond, rescue, recover, rehabilitate and ensure continuous disaster risk reduction in the state.
The data, according to LASEMA showed that out of the annual total of 1,675 attended by the agency in 2024, 167 incidents were attended to in the month of December, 2024, which effectively brought the total figures from June 1, 2019 to December 31, 2024 to 8,117 incidents attended to by the agency during the Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu led administration.
Out of the 167 incidents attended in December 2024, road accident category ranked first with 58 vehicular crashes, truck/tanker category ranked second with 43 incidents, comprising 29 truck/tanker accidents, 11 break downs, two fallen truck/tankers and 1 stuck tanker incident, and fire disaster ranks third with 33 incidents comprising 31 fire outbreaks, one burnt tanker/truck and one burnt car/Bus Rapid Transit, BRT.
17 other events comprising 15 assorted incidents, one well incident and one assault, ranked fourth, while the medical category ranked fifth with 13 assorted incidents, with one building collapse, one explosion, and one gas leakage jointly ranked sixth in position.
However, the agency did not record any cases under the marine, rail, and air crash categories in the month of December, 2024.
Data Analysis of incidents attended per Local Government in the month under review revealed that Eti-Osa Local Government ranked highest with 23 cases attended out of the 167 incidents recorded, followed by Ikeja LGA, with 22 recorded incidents, while the densely populated Alimosho LGA, with the largest landmass, ranked third with 21 recorded cases out of the 167 incidents attended in December, 2024.
Data showed Kosofe LGA ranked fourth with 15 incidents recorded, Mushin and Lagos Mainland LGAs ranked fifth, each with 12 incidents recorded, followed by Lagos Island LGA ranking at seventh with 11 incidents recorded, Oshodi-Isolo ranked eighth with 10 incidents recorded, Shomolu ranked ninth with eight incidents recorded, Apapa ranked 10th with seven incidents, and Surulere LGA ranked 11th with six incidents recorded.
Further, Ifako-Ijaiye LGA ranked 12th with five incidents, Amuwo-Odofin ranked 13th with three incidents recorded, while Agege, Ibeju-Lekki, Ikorodu, Epe, Ojo Local Government Areas and outside Lagos ranked in 14th place with two incidents each, while Badagry and Ajeromi-Ifelodun LGAs did not record any emergency/disaster incidents in December, Y2024.
Oke-Osanyitolu added that data generated by Operational Bases/Units and Pre-Hospital Care Unit spread through the three Senatorial Districts of Lagos for better coverage and swifter response time revealed that out of the 167 incidents attended in December, 2024, Pre-Hospital Care, ranked highest with 59 cases attended.
It also topped with 596 medical cases attended out of the 1,675 in Year 2024 Annual Data.
Close examination of available data from January 1st to December 31st Y2024 revealed that Lagos State experienced a total of 1,675 incidents, with the Truck/Tanker/Trailer category which comprises of 345 accidents, 129 broken down trucks and 19 fallen trucks/tankers, 10 fallen containers and four stuck trucks being responsible for 507 incidents.
Data equally revealed that the road accidents/crashes category comprising of 438 Vehicle Accidents, 18 broken down vehicles, and two others placed second with 458 incidents, while Fire disaster category comprising of 266 fire outbreaks, seven tanker/truck fires, and 12 Vehicular (Car/Bus Rapid Transit, BRT) fires ranked third with 285 incidents during the year.
During the period under review (Y2024) the air/train crash recorded the least incident in the year with three train crashes, followed by Marine Category which recorded six incidents comprising of three floodings and three boat mishaps, as well as six spillages /leakages comprising of three gas, 1 diesel,1 pipeline and 1 gas tanker spills, comprising of eight gas and one pipeline explosion.
Data on Emergency Trends in LGAs for last year revealed that Alimosho recorded the most number of cases with 262 incidents, while Ikeja LGA placed a distant second with 185 incidents and Eti-Osa LGA placed third with 168 cases, while Badagry Local Government Area recorded the lowest with four cases, followed by Ajeromi-Ifelodun with 17 cases and Ifako-Ijaiye LGA with 20 cases.

Also, the monthly emergency trends revealed that the most cases in a month was recorded in December, 2024 with 167 cases, followed by February in second place with 156 cases and March in third place with 148 cases, while the lowest number of incidents was recorded in August, Y2024, with 121 cases, followed by July with 123 cases then June and September placing third with 126 cases each.
In the last six years (1st June, 2019–31st December, 2024), the agency has attended to 8117 incidents in Lagos State where the highest number of incidents was recorded in Y2021 with 1,743 cases, followed by 1,682 recorded cases in Y2022 placing second in a downward trend, while data recorded that the agency attended to 1,675 cases in 2024.
