Lagos cracks down on single-use plastics, seizes items from supermarkets

The Lagos State Government has begun enforcing its ban on single-use plastics, confiscating the prohibited items from several supermarkets across the state.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the development in a video posted on X.com on Wednesday. The footage showed enforcement officers removing single-use plastic products, including cups and items with attached straws.

In his caption, Wahab explained that the team visited Blenco Supermarket in Lekki as part of the ongoing enforcement exercise. He added that similar operations were carried out at Blend and Temple Hill Supermarkets in Ire-Akari, Jendol Supermarket in Jakande Estate, Ejigbo, as well as Lastprize and Reno supermarkets on Liasu Road, Idimu.

He stressed that the exercise is aimed at ensuring compliance with the state’s directive to phase out single-use plastics, which contribute to environmental degradation and worsen flooding in Lagos.

The enforcement drive, which started on July 1, follows an 18-month grace period that allowed businesses to transition to eco-friendly alternatives. The ban covers the sale and use of disposable plastic bags, including the popular black nylon bags.
