Katsina student holds week-long prayer for Shettima’s retention as Vice President

Mohammed Yakubu, an 18-year-old 200-level Political Science student of Al-Qalam University, Katsina, has organised a seven-day prayer session seeking the retention of Vice President Kashim Shettima as President Bola Tinubu’s running mate in the 2027 elections.
The prayer, which ended on Friday at Maranta Sheikh Abba Abu, Kofar Kwaya, Katsina, featured mostly young clerics, according to a statement Yakubu released to PUNCH Online.
Explaining his motivation, Yakubu described Shettima as his role model, praising his support for President Tinubu in governance. “Shettima has been my role model, and seeing how he has helped His Excellency, President Bola Tinubu in running the affairs of our great country, they all deserve our prayers,” he said.
He urged Nigerian youths to pray for their leaders instead of criticising them, especially in light of the security challenges facing parts of the country. “Having studied Vice President Shettima’s leadership style, particularly his support for young people and farmers like my father, I decided to invite Islamic clerics—mostly youth like me—to pray for his political success,” Yakubu explained.
He also called on government at all levels to intensify efforts in addressing insecurity.
The prayer session comes amid speculation within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) about Shettima’s place on the 2027 ticket. While party leaders have dismissed such rumours, the issue has continued to stir debates among supporters.

Earlier in the week, while celebrating Shettima’s 59th birthday, President Tinubu described him as a loyal deputy. “Your dedication reassures me that I did not make a mistake in choosing you as my deputy,” the President said in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
