Kanu’s lawyer, brother remanded in Kuje Prison over Sowore-led protest

A Magistrate’s Court in Kuje, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has ordered the remand of Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyer, Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, his brother Prince Emmanuel Kanu, and ten others in Kuje Correctional Centre.

The group was charged with inciting public disturbance and breaching the peace following their involvement in the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest held in Abuja on Monday. The demonstration, led by activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, called for the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who is currently facing terrorism charges.

According to Daily Trust, police officers dispersed the protesters and made multiple arrests during the rally. Kanuta Kanu, another brother of Nnamdi Kanu, alleged in a post on X that the remand order was part of a broader plot by the government to frustrate Kanu’s upcoming trial.

Sowore, in a statement on Facebook, accused the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, of orchestrating their detention “at all costs,” describing the move as politically motivated.

Ejimakor later confirmed their remand on social media, stating that despite efforts to present their case, the magistrate insisted on keeping them in custody until Friday. He described the court’s decision as unfair, noting that several other courts in Abuja were bypassed in favour of the Kuje court.
