Kano ready to hold LG polls, says Governor Yusuf
Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State, on Sunday, assured residents of his administration’s readiness to conduct local government election.
Confirming the assurance via a statement, the spokesman of the governor, Sanusi Tofa, said the governor made the disclosure during a stakeholder’s meeting with the leadership of the ruling New Nigeria Peoples Party at Africa House, Government House, Kano, on Friday.
Furthermore, the governor disclosed plans to conduct the council poll in compliance with the judgment of the Supreme Court, affirming the financial autonomy of local government and their capacity as the third tier of government.
Yusuf, in the statement, reaffirmed his respect for the rule of law and commitment to financial prudency, accountability and transparency in governance at all tiers
” I assure of the conduct of a free, fair and credible local government elections. I urge the opposition parties to try their luck, as my administration will not interfere with the electoral process.”
“Our administration has allowed the previous LG Executive Councils in the 44 LGAs to conclude their tenure despite pressure from within. This is following the respect we have for the rule of law.”
“So, our respect for accountability and consideration of the recent Supreme Court judgment influence and our readiness to conduct council elections.”
The statement said preparations are in top gear by the Kano State Independent Electorate Commission on the conduct of council polls and I can assure you this would hold any time soon.
“We will soon invite you again for the selection of our party’s candidates to be fielded in the 44 LGAs, who will run for the office of Chairmen, Vice Chairmen and Councillors. We shall run peaceful campaigns with the belief that the majority of Kano people will vote for NNPP,” Yusuf assured.
