JUST IN: Tinubu directs FEC committee to reduce food prices

President Bola Tinubu has directed a Federal Executive Council (FEC) committee to take immediate steps aimed at reducing food prices nationwide.
Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, disclosed this on Wednesday in Abuja.
According to him, the President’s directive is focused on guaranteeing the safe movement of farm produce across major transport routes, thereby cutting down logistics costs.
“The President has given a matching order with a Federal Executive Council committee already working on strategies to promote safe passage of agricultural products across the country’s transport corridors,” Abdullahi said at a capacity-building workshop for Senate correspondents.
Nigeria has been grappling with worsening food insecurity following the removal of fuel subsidy, rising transport costs, and insecurity on highways, which continue to disrupt the movement of goods. Despite various interventions, food prices remain unaffordable for millions.
Abdullahi noted that the initiative aligns with Tinubu’s broader vision of food sovereignty—ensuring not only availability but also affordability, accessibility, and nutrition on a sustainable basis.
He further revealed that the government will soon launch a Farmer Soil Health Scheme to boost agricultural productivity, alongside a cooperative reform programme aimed at mobilising resources and empowering rural farmers.
“Mr. President has shown great interest in the cooperative sector as a veritable tool for resource mobilisation, economic activity generation, and improving members’ livelihoods,” the minister added.
The event, themed “Parliamentary Reporting: Issues, Challenges and Responsibilities,” also featured Senate Media Committee Chairman, Senator Yemi Adaramodu; former presidential aide, Senator Ita Solomon Enang; and NILDS Director-General, Prof. Abubakar Sulaiman.
Tinubu had earlier, during his June Democracy Day address at the National Assembly, reaffirmed that Nigeria is on the path to achieving food sovereignty through measures introduced by his administration.

“Our ‘Nigeria First’ policy will further enhance progress as we consolidate market-driven growth,” the President said at the time. “The improved economic performance is encouraging and validates the soundness of our policy measures. Our medium-term growth target remains an economy growing at seven per cent, with a stronger manufacturing base. We must learn to produce and grow most of our food, and we are on the path to achieving food sovereignty.”
