JUST IN: LASU Diploma Students Protest Alleged Denial of Direct Entry Admission Despite Meeting Requirements
Dozens of Lagos State University (LASU) Diploma graduates have raised alarm over what they describe as “unfair and unjust denial of admission” into the university’s direct entry programme, despite meeting all stated academic requirements.
According to the aggrieved students who spoke with 9jaReporters, they were informed during their Diploma programme that candidates with a minimum cumulative grade point of 3.0 or 3.5 would be eligible for Direct Entry admission into 200 level of related degree courses.
However, many of the students who reportedly graduated with distinctions and upper credits claim they have now been denied admission, while some others with lower grades were offered placement.
“We read and did our best. Now that we have good grades, they refused to give us admission. Some of us have 4.0 and 5.0 GPAs in different departments but were denied, while those with 2-point grades got admitted,” one affected student lamented.
In a statement issued on behalf of all Diploma graduates, the group expressed disappointment at the development, calling it “a betrayal of the promise” made to them when they enrolled in the Diploma programme.
“We fulfilled our own part , we paid our fees, attended classes, wrote exams, and completed the programme successfully. But today, we are being denied the admission we were promised after investing three full years of our lives,” the statement read.
The students have therefore announced plans to hold a peaceful protest within the LASU campus to press home their demands. According to them, the demonstration will be non-violent and respectful, aimed solely at drawing the attention of the university management to their plight.
“We are not here to fight or destroy anything. We are simply here to demand the right thing, to be given our rightful admission and the future we were promised,” the group emphasized.
When contacted, the aggrieved students said “I have 3.00 cgpa and Lasu is yet to release admission and I’ve been at home for a year plus now”, another added that “We are tired!!
We’ve read we’ve spent a lot of money,2 years in lasu, 1 year of staying at home, I have high grade, Release our admission!”

They called on the university authorities, the Lagos State government, and the general public to intervene and ensure fairness in the admission process.
As of the time of filing this report, LASU authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the allegations.
