JAMB Disowns Admission of FUTA Graduate, Says Record Not Found

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has denied approving the university admission of Basola Jamiu Owodunni, a graduate of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), stating that his admission was not recorded in its Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS).

In a statement issued on Sunday and signed by JAMB’s Public Communication Adviser, Fabian Benjamin, the Board addressed Basola’s recent claims on social media, where he alleged that JAMB had invalidated his admission seven years after he began his studies.

Basola stated that he sat for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) in 2017 and was admitted to FUTA in 2018 to study Civil Engineering, graduating in 2024 with a CGPA of 4.41. He said the issue arose during his final clearance, when the university’s student affairs office informed him that his mobilisation for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) had been declined.

“I was advised to check my name on the JAMB matriculation list, and it reflected a ‘fake admission’ status,” he said.

Basola added that after being unable to access his JAMB portal, he visited a JAMB office where he was allegedly told he could be handed over to the Department of State Services (DSS) for further investigation.

“With no resolution from JAMB, I reluctantly presented myself to the DSS, hoping it would expedite the process. I spent hours in DSS and police custody and was eventually released after a friend’s intervention,” he recounted.

In a video, Basola claimed that a representative from FUTA’s admission office provided documents to the police confirming that his admission followed due process. He said the police had assured him that a report would be forwarded to the Commissioner of Police in Abuja, but he has yet to receive any response from JAMB headquarters.

He also noted that he had written to FUTA officials, including the registrar, vice-chancellor, and the admissions committee chairman, seeking intervention.

“I feel helpless, and the university officials seem unsure about the next steps,” Basola said.

However, in its response, JAMB clarified that it does not initiate or recommend candidates for admission, but only validates those forwarded by accredited institutions.

“While his physical presence at the university is not in question, the Board maintains that he was never officially admitted through CAPS and therefore cannot be recognized by the NYSC or other official bodies,” Benjamin stated.

JAMB further described Basola as “an unknown entity in the Board’s admission records” and criticized the use of his personal background as an emotional appeal.

The Board also accused Basola of possessing a document not issued by its system and urged him to explain how he obtained it to help clarify his situation.

“This case reinforces the importance of ensuring all admissions are processed and printed through CAPS,” the statement emphasized.

JAMB concluded by stating that it remains committed to defending the rights of all candidates and would support Basola if it is established that he followed due process.

“If found to be in compliance with the law, the Board will stand firmly behind him,” the statement added.
