Insecurity: IGP Kayode Egbetokun visits Benue

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, arrived in Benue State on Monday, June 16, to personally assess the deteriorating security situation following a series of violent attacks that have left dozens dead and hundreds displaced.
His visit comes just days after a brutal assault on Yelwata community, where suspected herdsmen reportedly launched a deadly attack, adding to the rising toll of violence across the state.
Benue—widely regarded as a major agricultural hub in Nigeria’s North Central region—has been a flashpoint for long-standing conflicts between farming communities and nomadic herders, with recent weeks seeing a disturbing surge in attacks.
Egbetokun’s visit follows a renewed directive from President Bola Tinubu, who on Sunday ordered security chiefs to urgently restore law and order in the state.
Reacting to the crisis, President Tinubu described the ongoing violence as “deeply troubling” and unacceptable.
“The latest news of wanton killings in Benue State is very depressing. We must not allow this bloodletting to continue unabated. Enough is enough. I have directed the security agencies to act decisively, arrest perpetrators on all sides, and ensure they are prosecuted,” Tinubu said.
