Heartbreaking Survivor Testimony: Mojisola Adunni Benson Relives the Horror of the Owo Church Massacre in Ondo State

On June 5, 2022, St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State, became the scene of a horrifying massacre that left the entire nation in mourning. Among the survivors is Mojisola Adunni Benson, 50, whose vivid and heartbreaking account sheds light on the chaos, courage, and crushing loss experienced that day.
Mojisola recalls the peaceful Sunday service being shattered by a sudden explosion, followed closely by deafening gunfire. In an instant, the sanctity of the church was replaced by panic and bloodshed. People screamed, ran, and fell – some never to rise again.
Driven by survival instinct, Mojisola escaped through a window, sustaining injuries. Even in pain, her concern was for her aged grandmother. As armed assailants continued their attack, she sought refuge in the thick bushes behind the church, hiding for over an hour while gunshots echoed around her.
Eventually, law enforcement arrived, and she, along with others, cautiously emerged. But her relief turned to heartbreak when she discovered her grandmother among the victims, lying in a pool of blood. The trauma of that day remains with her – a searing reminder of the brutality inflicted on innocent worshippers.
