Full list of terrorism charges for which Nnamdi Kanu was convicted

The Federal High Court in Abuja has convicted Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), on all seven terrorism-related counts filed by the Federal Government.

He was subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment following the judgment delivered by Justice James Omotosho on Thursday. The court found him guilty of offences including terrorism acts, leading a proscribed organisation, inciting violence, threatening security operatives, and issuing dangerous broadcasts.

Below is a summary of all seven counts, based on court documents obtained by PUNCH Online:

Count One

That Nnamdi Kanu, between 2014 and 2015 in London, broadcast on Radio Biafra—monitored in Enugu and other locations—details of preparations for the South-East, South-South, parts of Kogi and Benue to secede from Nigeria and form the “Republic of Biafra,” an offence punishable under Section 41(c) of the Criminal Code Act.

Count Two

That on April 28, 2015, in a Radio Biafra broadcast monitored in Enugu and other parts of Nigeria, Kanu referred to then-President Muhammadu Buhari as a “paedophile,” “terrorist,” and “embodiment of evil,” knowing the statements were false—an offence under Section 375 of the Criminal Code Act.

Count Three

That between March and April 2015, Kanu imported a TRAM 50L radio transmitter into Nigeria, concealing it in a container declared as household items, contrary to Section 47(2) of the Criminal Code Act.

Count Four

That between 2018 and 2021, in broadcasts from London monitored in Enugu and Abuja, Kanu professed to be a member of IPOB, a proscribed organisation, punishable under Section 16 of the Terrorism Prevention (Amendment) Act, 2013.

Count Five

That on April 22, 2021, in a Radio Biafra broadcast monitored across Nigeria, he incited IPOB members to search for security agents and their families—an act of terrorism under Section 1(2)(h) of the Terrorism Prevention (Amendment) Act.

Count Six

That on May 16, 2021, Kanu broadcast a threat that “in two weeks, what will happen will shake the world… people will die… the whole world will stand still,” an offence under Section 1(2)(b) of the Terrorism Prevention (Amendment) Act.

Count Seven

That on May 31, 2021, he issued a threat that anyone who disobeyed his sit-at-home order should “write his/her will,” leading to the shutdown of banks, schools, markets, malls, fuel stations and grounding of vehicular movement—an offence under Section 1(2)(b) of the Terrorism Prevention (Amendment) Act.
