FG should train NYSC members to support fight against insecurity — Ashimolowo
Matthew Ashimolowo, founder of Kingsway International Christian Centre (KICC), has urged the Federal Government to include security training in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme to strengthen the nation’s fight against insecurity.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Thursday, the cleric said NYSC members should be trained to respond to suspicious activities, noting that such awareness would significantly boost national security.
“Our NYSC members should be trained to the point where, if they see someone even just smoking hemp, they can take action. That will raise the security level,” he said.
Ashimolowo encouraged Nigerians to support President Bola Tinubu’s push for improved policing and military capacity, stressing that national security requires the involvement of every citizen.
“Let’s stand behind the president now that he’s calling for more policing and more soldiers,” he urged.
He also highlighted the potential of Nigeria’s youthful population—about 60 percent of the country—and suggested adopting Israel’s model, where young people serve in the military.
“Whenever I visit Israel, I’m amazed that their army is made up of 18-year-olds. They serve from 18 to 22. We should train our NYSC members the same way,” he said.
Ashimolowo argued that such training would create a more vigilant society and strengthen internal security.
On state police, however, he expressed caution, warning that some leaders might misuse such forces.

“State police may work, but it could become someone’s personal army used to intimidate others,” he said.
The cleric called on Nigerians to work together to build a safer nation.
“Let’s raise our security level, make Nigerians proud, and tap into the talent in our country. I believe we have leadership that wants progress—let’s support him,” he said, adding that everyone should contribute to maintaining security.
