Expert Warns Smokers, Diabetics of Cardiac Arrest Risk

Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Uyo, Eyo Ekpe, has cautioned cigarette smokers and diabetic patients to take extra care of their chest health to reduce the risk of sudden cardiac arrest.
Delivering the university’s 117th inaugural lecture on Wednesday, titled “My Chest! My Chest!! My Chest!!!: Relieving Chest Pain, Preventing Death and Restoring Health”, Ekpe explained that both smoking and diabetes can trigger abnormal heart rhythms, known as arrhythmias, which often lead to cardiac arrest.
He noted that many Nigerians have lost their lives because they ignored warning signs or delayed medical care for chest-related conditions.
“Chest pain should never be ignored. Early reporting of symptoms allows clinicians to take proper medical history, conduct thorough examinations, order the necessary tests, and apply evidence-based treatment to relieve pain, prevent death, and restore health,” he said.
Ekpe urged Nigerians to diligently protect their hearts by avoiding cigarettes, managing high blood pressure, controlling diabetes, reducing cholesterol levels, and adopting regular physical exercise. He also emphasized that triggers of arrhythmias such as stress, obesity, hypertension, and alcohol abuse should be avoided.

The professor further advised that only qualified medical doctors should handle chest-related ailments to prevent misdiagnosis and complications, stressing the importance of regular checkups and timely medical consultations.
On safety, he highlighted the need for safe driving practices, consistent use of seat belts, and restricted use of motorcycles, bicycles, and tricycles on traffic-heavy roads. He added that victims of chest pain or injuries must receive prompt medical attention from professionals.
