CSO Demands Urgent Intervention for Neglected FCT School Lacking Toilets, Offices

A civil society organisation, MonITNG, has raised concerns over the dire state of Gaba LEA Primary School in Abuja’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Despite being in existence since 1976, the school now suffers from severe infrastructural decay and neglect.
In a statement, MonITNG revealed that the school lacks basic facilities, which has severely hindered students’ access to quality education. According to the group, Gaba LEA has no headteacher’s office, no perimeter fence, and overcrowded classrooms with leaking roofs. The school also lacks adequate toilet facilities, posing health and safety risks—particularly for female pupils.
“When it rains, lessons are interrupted. Pupils scramble to move their desks away from rainwater dripping through holes in the roof. Many sit on broken benches or directly on the floor. The absence of fencing leaves children exposed to both distractions and potential dangers,” the group stated.
Sanitation was identified as a major challenge. The few available toilets are either insufficient or in such poor condition that some girls miss school on certain days, MonITNG noted. The lack of a proper office for the headteacher has forced school administrators to carry out their duties in makeshift spaces, sometimes under trees.
The organisation criticised what it sees as misplaced government priorities, especially in light of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike’s recent claims that 60 schools have been renovated under his leadership.

MonITNG warned that while such renovation announcements dominate headlines, schools like Gaba LEA remain abandoned and unsafe. It also pointed to reports of over ₦250 billion in basic education funds lying unused due to bureaucratic bottlenecks.
The group urged Minister Wike and FCT Senator Ireti Kingibe to take immediate steps to upgrade public schools in neglected communities, beginning with Gaba LEA Primary School.
