Bayern Munich delivered a ruthless performance against amateur side Auckland City, crushing the New Zealanders 10–0 in their Club World Cup opener on Sunday. Jamal Musiala stole the spotlight with a second-half hat-trick after coming off the bench.

Goals came in abundance for the German giants, with Kingsley Coman, Michael Olise, and Thomas Müller each scoring twice. Sacha Boey also found the net in the Group C fixture, which includes Boca Juniors and Benfica.

Harry Kane started the match but was subbed off just past the hour mark without scoring. His replacement, Musiala, went on to score three goals in 18 minutes, including a penalty he earned himself.

“We must stay humble, but I’m pleased we approached the game with the right attitude,” said Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany. “It was a solid start, but tougher tests lie ahead.”

Playing under the Cincinnati sun, Bayern were in total control from the start. Coman opened the scoring in the 6th minute, followed by goals from Boey and Olise, who dazzled with a curling strike into the far corner. Müller added the fifth before Olise grabbed his second in first-half stoppage time to make it 6–0.

Auckland City held off Bayern’s attack for much of the second half until Musiala’s introduction shifted the momentum once again. The 21-year-old added flair and finesse, converting a penalty and rounding off a stellar performance. Müller capped the match with Bayern’s tenth goal—his 250th career goal for the club—as he prepares to depart after the tournament.

Despite the heavy defeat, Auckland City’s interim coach Ivan Vicelich remained proud: “This is the reality of playing one of the world’s best teams. For our amateur players, this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and they gave it their all.”

The emphatic result mirrors some of Bayern’s biggest historical wins, equaling their record Bundesliga margin of victory (11–1 vs. Borussia Dortmund in 1971), and adds momentum to their campaign. The German champions have previously won the Club World Cup in 2013 and 2020.

Bayern will next face Boca Juniors in Miami on Friday, while Auckland City are set to play Benfica in Orlando earlier the same day.
