The Speaker of Anambra State House of Assembly; Rt. Hon. Rita Maduagwu, has been impeached and a new Speaker; Rt. Hon. Ikem Uzoezie representing Aguata 11 Constituency, has been elected as the new Speaker.
The former Speaker; Hon. Rita Maduagwu representing Nnewi South 11 Constituency in the State Assembly was impeached following allegations of financial misapropriation, abuse of power, non performance and outright incompetence leveled against her by her colleagues.
Hon. Rita Maduagwu’s impeachment was signed by 22 members of Anambra State House of Assembly, out of a total of 30 members of the House.
The impeachment of Hon. Rita today was perfected during the sitting of members in the legislative complex in Awka.
Three members; Hon. Uche Okafor, Hon. Lawrence Ezeudu and Hon. Pascal Agbodike, who attempted to shout down the process, were suspended, they later went to felicitate with the new Speaker; Rt. Hon. Ikem Uzoezie.
9jareporters also gathered that after the impeachment, the new Speaker who addressed the press admist wild cheer and shout of “Mr Speaker”! was on his way to his office when the Chief of Staff to the Governor came into the complex with some police officers. It was not clear why he came but it was suspected that he wanted to arrest Rt. Hon. Ikem. Seeing the support the new Speaker enjoy amongst his colleagues and members of staff of the House, who couldnt allow him go far with the new Speaker for a two aside, Primus Odili the Chief of Staff, managed to speak with Rt. Hon. Ikem for only a few minutes and both men went their ways with people surrounding shouting, hailing the new speaker. The members thereafter moved in a convoy to an undisclosed location.
The former Speaker; Hon. Rita Maduagwu later gathered about 8 members, many of whose signatures for her impeachment were secured and went into the plenary. Got media coverage and later said she was not impeached.
The days ahead will be a very interesting one. Although some of the people who were there during the impeachment of Hon. Rita was later seen with the former speaker possing for photograph inside the Speaker’s office. However, the fact remains that the new Speaker; Rt. Hon. Ikem Uzoezie, has the majority required of his colleagues. Also as a bonus, the full support of House of Assembly staff members, who went agog celebrating his emergence.
