Aisha Buhari rules out remarriage after former President Buhari’s death
Former First Lady Aisha Buhari has announced that she will not remarry following the passing of her husband, President Muhammadu Buhari.
The revelation came during the unveiling of Dr Charles Omole’s biography, From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari, at the State House in Abuja.
Aisha described her decision as pragmatic rather than moralistic, explaining that her family responsibilities and grandchildren shape her choices.
“It is not a moral pronouncement so much as a pragmatic one: she has grandchildren; one husband was enough,” the biography noted.
The former First Lady’s stance challenges cultural expectations that cast widows as either betrayers or saints, signalling her determination to define her own future on her terms.
Plans for a quieter life
Aisha Buhari plans to step back from the political spotlight, dedicating her time to family, philanthropy, and travel.
She intends to spend quality time with her grandchildren, ensuring she remains a visible presence in their lives rather than a distant figure.
She will continue to oversee the activities of the Aisha Buhari Foundation and her cardiovascular and medical centre in Kano, which has completed over 200 procedures.
The biography highlights her approach as a blend of domesticity and cosmopolitan engagement, hosting and collaborating in a quieter, sustainable manner.
