Tight security at N’Assembly ahead of Tinubu’s 2026 budget presentation

Access to the National Assembly is currently under intense scrutiny as personnel of the Nigeria Police Force and their National Security and Civil Defence Corps have taken strategic positions ahead of President Bola Tinubu’s presentation of the 2026 budget estimates before a joint session of the parliament at 3 PM.

Our correspondent, who was at the venue, reports that across the main gate, villa gates, and other entry and exit points to the National Assembly Complex, security personnel are stationed to monitor human and vehicular movements ahead of the President’s arrival.

Unlike normal parliamentary days, where a presentation of the National Assembly’s pass is often enough to secure entrance to the parliamentary buildings, the 2026 budget presentation tag is the official pass recognised by in-house security personnel, allowing access to the complex.

Aware of the difficulty of passage of journalists to cover the event, the chairmen of the Senate and House of Representatives’ Press Corps arrived early to procure tags for their members.

A policeman stationed at the visitors’ park, assisted by an official of the Federal Roads Safety Corps, could be heard shouting at commercial drivers who brought in persons to witness the event.

“Drop them and leave this place. If they don’t have tags, take them back. All those who have business here today will be allowed in,” he said.
