Senate Urges Tinubu to Exempt Lawmakers From Police Withdrawal Directive

The Senate on Wednesday appealed to President Bola Tinubu to exempt lawmakers from his directive ordering the withdrawal of police escorts from VIPs, warning that the measure poses significant security risks to members of the National Assembly.

The appeal followed a complaint by Senator Abdul Ningi (Kebbi Central), who told the chamber that his only police orderly had been withdrawn earlier that morning. He noted that while lawmakers were losing their security aides, children of political office holders, foreign business executives, entertainers and others continued to move around with heavy police convoys.

Presiding over the plenary, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin said the Senate leadership had met on Tuesday to discuss the issue and resolved to formally request that the president exempt senators and restore the police personnel already withdrawn.

Jibrin expressed confidence that President Tinubu—whom he described as a listening leader—would consider the appeal.
