LASU Diploma Graduates Brutalised By Campus Security During Peaceful Protest Over Denied Direct Entry Admission

Several diploma students of the Lagos State University (LASU) were reportedly brutalised by university security operatives during a peaceful protest held on Tuesday, November 12, 2025.

Findings by SaharaReporters revealed that the protesters were diploma graduates who had successfully completed their programmes with impressive results but were denied direct entry admission into 200 Level of the university’s degree programme—contrary to earlier assurances by the management.

Video clips and photographs obtained by SaharaReporters showed security personnel chasing, dragging, and beating the protesting students. Some of the students sustained injuries and bruises, while others were left emotionally traumatised.

According to sources, the affected students, many of whom graduated with Cumulative Grade Point Averages (CGPAs) ranging from 4.0 to 4.8, were initially informed that a CGPA of 3.0 and above would qualify them for direct entry admission. However, the university reportedly raised the requirement to 3.5 CGPA without prior notice, leaving over 300 students stranded..

“In October 2025, LASU began processing the direct entry admissions for diploma graduates. But midway, the university suddenly raised the minimum CGPA from 3.0 to 3.5, admitting only a few candidates,” one of the affected students told SaharaReporters.

“This unexpected change shattered the hopes of hundreds of students who had already purchased JAMB Direct Entry forms based on the initial promise.”

The students said they wrote formal letters of appeal to the Vice-Chancellor, Dean of Student Affairs, and relevant faculty heads but received no response. They also reached out to the Lagos State Ministry of Education and the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Student Affairs, as well as activists on social media platforms—all to no avail.

“We are not fighting LASU; we are only fighting for our future. If the department is full, they should place us in related courses. We just want to continue the academic journey we worked hard for.”

As of the time of filing this report, the university management had yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident..

Meanwhile, the hashtag #JusticeForLASUDiplomaStudents has gained traction on social media, with Nigerians demanding accountability from the LASU management and intervention from the Lagos State Government and human rights organisations.

The affected students are appealing to the state government and the Office of the Special Adviser on Student Affairs to intervene and ensure fairness in the admission process.
