Ruggedman says he’s yet to get due recognition for shaping Nigerian hip-hop

Veteran rapper Michael Stephens, popularly known as Ruggedman, has said he doesn’t receive enough credit for his contributions to Nigeria’s hip-hop culture, even though his name remains a major part of its history.
In an interview with Saturday Beats, the rapper spoke about the decline of Nigerian rap’s popularity compared to afrobeats and reflected on his journey in the industry.
“Rap in Nigeria has taken the back seat to afrobeats because it’s easier to make. Real rap needs more than just a catchy beat or street slang. Many people today want easy success, and afrobeats gives them that. Financially, it’s also more rewarding, so I don’t blame artists for choosing it,” he said.
When asked if Nigerian rap is evolving or just trying to stay relevant, he replied, “It’s both. The few still doing pure rap are evolving, while those who mix rap with singing or afrobeats are adapting to survive. You can’t pay bills with titles like ‘best rapper’ or ‘legendary rapper,’ so I understand their choices.”
Speaking on his legacy, Ruggedman said he believes his influence hasn’t been fully acknowledged. “I don’t think I’ve received enough recognition for what I’ve done for hip-hop in Nigeria, but I know I’m already part of its history. Sometimes I see online lists that leave my name out, and I just laugh because people in the comments always point out that the list isn’t complete without Ruggedman. That shows me there are still fans who know the real story. I understand that younger people might not know much about our era, so I forgive them, but I only step in to correct misinformation when it comes from people or organisations that should know better,” he said.
Ruggedman also revealed plans for a new project he described as a first of its kind. “I’m about to do something no Nigerian rapper has done before — I’ll release Best of Ruggedman: The Acoustic Sessions Vol. 1 on October 24, 2025. It’ll feature five of my songs performed with just an acoustic guitar — no beats, no extra instruments, just raw lyrics and emotion,” he added.
