Sanwo-Olu launches Omi Eko project, says Lagos story is written on water

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Friday launched the Omi Eko Project, a major initiative aimed at transforming water transportation across the state through the introduction of 70 electric ferries, upgraded jetties, and modernised infrastructure.

Speaking at the launch, the governor described the project as a bold step towards building a sustainable and connected transport system, saying Lagos was returning to its roots as a city built on water. He noted that one-third of the state remains surrounded by water and that the new initiative would help reduce road congestion and boost economic activity.

Sanwo-Olu explained that under the THEMES Plus Agenda, water transport had been identified as a key part of Lagos’ urban mobility strategy. He highlighted previous efforts, including expanding the ferry fleet, improving safety standards, and establishing Africa’s first Waterways Monitoring and Data Centre to enhance efficiency and security.

The governor added that the Omi Eko Project represents a comprehensive plan for sustainable mobility, merging technology with environmental responsibility. He also acknowledged the collaboration between the government, development partners, and private investors, while commending President Bola Tinubu and French President Emmanuel Macron for supporting innovation and sustainable development.

Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, described the Omi Eko Project as “innovation in motion,” noting that it builds on Lagos’ ongoing transport reforms such as the Blue and Red rail lines, BRT network expansion, and improved last-mile bus connectivity. Special Adviser on Blue Economy, Damilola Emmanuel, also praised past leaders for laying the groundwork for water transport development, saying the ₦410 million project would upgrade 20 jetties, dredge 15 routes, and create jobs while reducing the city’s carbon footprint.
