2027: Coalition Urges Atiku, Obi, Others to Formalize ADC Membership

The opposition coalition has directed its members to resign from their current political parties and officially join the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
This resolution was reached at a closed-door meeting held on Thursday under the chairmanship of the ADC’s interim National Chairman, Senator David Mark. As part of the decisions, the coalition announced the suspension of its ongoing application to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the registration of the All Democratic Alliance (ADA).
Speaking on behalf of the ADC, party spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi said members unanimously agreed to back whoever emerges as the party’s presidential flagbearer in the 2027 elections.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who confirmed his participation in the meeting via a post on X, described the gathering as part of a wider resistance movement.
“I am currently at the stakeholders’ meeting of the Coalition African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Abuja,” Atiku wrote. “It’s a meeting of the Nigerian people against the oligarchs who promote poverty and insecurity in the land.”
He stressed that the opposition alliance is committed to presenting a credible alternative to President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Other prominent figures present at the meeting included former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, former Anambra Governor Peter Obi, and former Sokoto Governor Aminu Tambuwal, among several top coalition leaders.
The coalition had in July adopted the ADC as the platform on which it will challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
In a letter dated July 14, 2025, addressed to the PDP Chairman of Jada 1 Ward in Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Atiku confirmed his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party, citing irreconcilable differences. He noted that the party’s current direction had strayed from its founding principles, hence his decision to part ways.
Meanwhile, Peter Obi has yet to make his official defection to the ADC.
