Kwankwaso dismisses rumours of defection to APC

Former Kano State Governor and national leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, has dismissed reports claiming he intends to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The former Defence Minister issued a swift rebuttal on Friday following speculation that he had submitted a letter of intent to the APC and was already in talks with the party’s National Chairman.

In a statement personally signed and released through his media team, Kwankwaso described the claims as baseless.
“We have been alerted to some online statements suggesting that we have submitted a letter of intent to join a political party in the country,” the statement read.
“We would like to clarify that we have not made any such submission to any party. The public is therefore advised to rely on established official channels for further updates,” he added.

The clarification followed widespread reports earlier on Friday alleging that Kwankwaso had secretly written to the APC national secretariat expressing interest in joining the party. The reports also suggested discreet discussions with the APC leadership, sparking a wave of reactions on social media and within party circles.

The development has further fuelled political speculation as the 2027 general elections approach, with analysts noting that the APC is keen on consolidating its northern base.

While Kwankwaso insists no such move has been made, observers point out that in Nigeria’s political terrain, denials are not always the final word.
