Ex-NNPC GMD Kyari opens up after EFCC quiz

Former Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, on Wednesday spoke publicly for the first time after being interrogated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged financial misconduct during his tenure.
Kyari arrived at the EFCC headquarters in Jabi, Abuja, around 2:15 p.m., where investigators questioned him on allegations of conspiracy, abuse of office, and money laundering.
Addressing reporters briefly after leaving the premises, he said: “I have done my part; the EFCC must do theirs. When each of us does our duty, without fear or favour, with honour, respect, and commitment, Nigeria moves forward.”
His questioning comes amid an ongoing EFCC probe into his financial activities. In August, Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja ordered a temporary freeze of four Jaiz Bank accounts linked to Kyari, following an EFCC request. While the agency had sought a 60-day freeze, the court granted 30 days, subject to renewal. The matter was adjourned to September 23 for an update.
In his ruling, Justice Nwite said:“I have listened to the counsel for the applicant and examined the affidavit evidence with the exhibits attached. I find this application meritorious and hereby grant it as prayed.
According to an affidavit filed by EFCC investigator Amin Abdullahi, the probe was triggered by a petition dated April 24 from a civil society group, Guardians of Democracy and Rule of Law, accusing Kyari of conspiracy, abuse of office, and money laundering.

Kyari, who oversaw the transition of NNPC into NNPCL, has refrained from making detailed comments, insisting that the anti-graft agency be allowed to conclude its work. The EFCC has yet to confirm whether charges will follow, but the investigation remains ongoing and the freeze order could be extended.
Appointed NNPC GMD in 2019 and later retained as NNPCL head after its commercialisation, Kyari exited office in July 2025.
