Nigerian students now rely on AI for support — Google

Nigerian students are turning to artificial intelligence more than ever to aid their studies, according to fresh Google Search trend data released on Tuesday as schools resume nationwide.
Google revealed that searches linking “AI + studying” have surged by over 200 per cent compared with 2024, showing that learners are not only curious about AI but are actively adopting it as a study partner. Students, the company noted, are exploring AI tutors, free tools, and prompts to guide their work across different subjects.
The data further showed that searches for “AI + chemistry” rose by 50 per cent, while “AI + maths” and “AI + languages” each recorded a 30 per cent increase. Queries combining AI with grammar also grew by 20 per cent.
Among the top search questions were: “What is the best AI in the world for solving mathematical problems?” and “How to use AI to solve math problems.”
Google’s West Africa Director, Olumide Balogun, explained that the trend demonstrates how students are embracing AI as a tool to enhance their understanding of complex topics like chemistry and mathematics. He added that Google remains committed to providing solutions that empower students to learn, grow, and succeed.
The company also observed that curiosity about AI is expanding beyond academics. Searches such as “how to use AI” and “what is the full meaning of AI” jumped by 80 per cent, while “who is the father of AI” rose by 70 per cent. Notably, searches for “AI detection” skyrocketed by 290 per cent — a sign, Google said, of growing discussions around responsible use and academic integrity.

Additionally, career-oriented queries are on the rise. Google disclosed that “Generative AI” has emerged as a breakout search term in the past year, often appearing with “professional certification,” suggesting that young Nigerians are preparing themselves for future career opportunities.
Overall, the company noted that AI-related searches in Nigeria reached an all-time high in 2025, rising 60 per cent compared to the previous year.
