Charly Boy shares experiences with mental health, urges open conversations

Veteran musician and media personality, Charles Chukwuemeka Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has spoken candidly about his struggles with mental health.
In a heartfelt Instagram post on Tuesday, the 75-year-old revealed that his recent trip to Europe, initially planned for three weeks, lasted only ten days. He explained that the visit, which was meant to help him “reboot and recharge,” unexpectedly cut short because he felt restless and unsettled.
“I jetted off to Europe to spend time with my brother, Dr Alban. The plan was to stay three weeks, recharging myself. But after ten days, I began to feel uneasy, like I had left something behind in Nigeria — the same place that sometimes robs me of sleep. I couldn’t even complete two weeks before I rushed back,” he wrote.
Charly Boy admitted that life can sometimes feel overwhelming, stressing that depression is a serious issue that must not be ignored.
“The truth is, depression is real. I was lucky to take a break, step away, and return refreshed, still holding on to that foreign breeze. But not everyone has that kind of privilege,” he noted, adding that many people are left with no choice but to face their struggles head-on.
He went on to advocate for greater openness around mental health, reminding his followers that it is neither a weakness nor a taboo.

“We must start talking about these things. Mental health is not a joke, not a weakness, not a taboo — it’s real. If Area Fada can admit that sometimes life feels overwhelming, then you don’t need to pretend. Speak up, take a breather, and find your balance. Life will keep testing us, but we must not allow it to break us,” he concluded.
