2027 Presidency: APC says ticket open despite Tinubu’s endorsement

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has clarified that while President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has received broad support from party leaders for a second term, other members interested in the 2027 presidential race will still be allowed to contest for the party’s ticket.

The party’s National Organising Secretary, Sulaiman Argungu, made this known on Wednesday during an interactive session with journalists at the APC national secretariat in Abuja.

He explained that Tinubu’s endorsement by the National Working Committee, the Progressives Governors Forum led by Governor Hope Uzodinma, and the National Assembly leadership under Senator Godswill Akpabio was based on his “remarkable performance.”

However, Argungu stressed that the party remains committed to internal democracy and will not restrict other aspirants.

According to him:

“We will definitely not close our doors to other presidential aspirants. When the time comes, our timetable will be made public. Anybody who wishes to run for the presidency under APC will have the right to obtain the Expression of Interest and Nomination forms. We never said the process was locked; we are only expressing appreciation for the President’s achievements and believe he deserves a second term, hence the endorsement.”

On the party’s performance in the recent by-elections, Argungu attributed APC’s victory in 13 out of 16 contested seats to “the grace of Almighty Allah” and the commitment of its leaders and members.

He added:

“This is a remarkable achievement and a reaffirmation of the confidence Nigerians continue to have in the APC. These victories are not mere numbers; they reflect the growing acceptance of our party and the people’s belief in our capacity to deliver purposeful leadership and good governance.”
