JAMB Uncovers 9,460 Illegal Admissions in 20 Tertiary Institutions

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has identified 9,460 illegal admissions conducted across 20 tertiary institutions in Nigeria for the 2024 academic session.

According to JAMB, these admissions were processed outside the Central Admission Processing System (CAPS), a platform designed to ensure transparency and fairness in Nigeria’s admission process.

Leading the list is Kano State University of Science and Technology with 2,215 unauthorized admissions, followed by Ladoke Akintola University of Technology with 1,215. Other institutions implicated include Gombe State University (1,164), Emmanuel Alayande University of Education (761), Federal University of Technology, Owerri (534), Ambrose Alli University (514), Igbinedion University (365), Akwa Ibom Polytechnic (340), and the College of Nursing, National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi (281).

Additional schools cited are Achievers University (267), Nigeria Police Academy (263), Abia State Polytechnic (256), Osun State University (224), Federal University Lafia (189), Niger State Polytechnic (182), Federal Polytechnic Idah (171), Edo State Polytechnic (166), Anchor University (133), Michael and Cecilia Ibru University (116), and the Federal College of Animal Health and Production Technology (113).

JAMB emphasized that CAPS was introduced to centralize and streamline admissions into tertiary institutions, allowing prospective students to monitor their admission status while ensuring merit-based selection. The platform promotes fairness and efficiency, discouraging underhand practices by institutions.

The board has repeatedly cautioned institutions against offering admissions outside the CAPS platform, warning that such admissions are invalid and that affected students may be disqualified from the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program.

Speaking at JAMB’s 2025 policy meeting in Abuja, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, reaffirmed the government’s stance, declaring all admissions made outside of CAPS as illegal. He warned that institutions and individuals found culpable would face strict sanctions.
