Ojude LASU: LASU Students Channels Ojude Oba Grandeur in a Campus Cultural Masterpiece

The Lagos State University, Ojo, came alive with vibrant energy, colours, and the heartbeat of tradition yesterday, Thursday, as students across all faculties gathered to celebrate Ojude LASU a cultural carnival creatively inspired by the iconic Ojude Oba festival held annually in Ijebu Ode.
Held at the university’s Sports Centre, the event was more than just a spectacle; it was a living tribute to the richness of Nigeria’s diverse heritage, a blend of youthful creativity and ancestral pride. Each faculty turned out in full splendour, showcasing traditional attire, music, dance, and customs that reflect the mosaic of ethnic groups that make up Nigeria. From flowing agbadas to intricately woven wrappers, from the rhythmic beats of the talking drum to the melodic tunes of local chants, Ojude LASU was a cultural tapestry that brought everyone under one proud roof of unity in diversity.
As students danced and marched in honour of their faculties in the same spirit the various age grades and families pay homage to the Awujale of Ijebuland during the Ojude Oba , it became evident that LASU students had reimagined a cultural tradition and made it their own. It wasn’t just about performance; it was about identity, expression, and pride in their roots.
The festival also marks part of the lineup of events to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the Lagos State University Students’ Union (LASUSU), further underscoring its significance in the calendar of the institution.
Speaking with our correspondent at 9jaReporters, the Students’ Union Public Relations Officer, Comrade Olamide Asikoto, expressed deep pride in the outcome of the event. “This is not just an event. It’s a celebration of who we are. We want the world to see that we can embrace modernity without forgetting our heritage. This is one of the most colourful event we’ve had in a while,” he said.
True to his words, the festival had all the elements of a grand celebration rich traditional fashion, energetic cultural dances, dramatizations of folklore, and inter-faculty parades that echoed the regality of the original Ojude Oba, but with a vibrant youthful twist.
While the Ojude Oba festival pays homage to royal legacy and historical continuity, Ojude LASU celebrates the future of that legacy the young custodians of culture in academic robes, who proudly wear tradition on their sleeves. It is both a nod to the past and a bold step into the future.
As the sun set over the Ojo campus and students took photos to preserve the memories, one thing was clear: Ojude LASU was not just an event , it was an experience. A reminder that even in the hustle of lectures, exams, and campus life, culture remains a vibrant heartbeat that binds generations.
