The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has met with the leaders of Yelwata community in the Guma Local Government Area of Benue State following a deadly attack that left scores dead.

A post on the official X.com account of the Nigerian Police Force on Monday revealed that Egbetokun alongside the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, assessed the damage of the attack and engaged with the community leaders.

The post read, “IGP live at Yelwata community, Guma LGA, Benue State, alongside the CDS, General Christopher Musa, where he assessed the damage and engaged community leaders.”

PUNCH Online reports that Egbetokun arrived in Benue State on Monday and ordered the immediate deployment of additional tactical teams to the region.

The deployment comes amid mounting public outrage and calls on social media for the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency in Benue, following a two-day killing spree by suspected herders.

Recall that at least 45 people were confirmed dead in Guma Local Government Area, though local leaders estimate the toll could exceed 200, with reports of entire families burnt alive and security officers among the victims.

Nigerians have widely criticised the Federal Government’s silence over the Benue killings, contrasting it with the government’s swift response to the political unrest in Rivers State in March, which saw the declaration of a state of emergency without any reported deaths.
