It’s aimed at targeting the tradition of the Nigerian people- Deji Adeyanju calls on the National Assembly to repeal the Naira Abuse provision in the CBN Act

Prominent lawyer Deji Adeyanju is urging the National Assembly to repeal the provision in the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act that prohibits Naira abuse. Adeyanju argues that this law unfairly targets Nigerians’ cultural practices, particularly the tradition of “Naira spraying” during celebrations. He notes that Section 21 of the CBN Act makes it a crime to tamper with the Naira, including actions like spraying or defacing notes. According to Adeyanju, this law is inconsistently enforced and disproportionately punishes individuals while ignoring more serious issues, such as corruption among government officials. He believes the focus should be on addressing real problems like looting of public funds rather than criminalizing cultural practices.
