2027: PDP Woos Jonathan for Presidential Comeback

The opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is making moves to persuade former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election under its platform.
According to a report by BBC Hausa monitored on Tuesday, the party’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Abdullahi, confirmed that efforts are underway to convince Jonathan to return to the race.
Jonathan, who served one term as president before losing his re-election bid to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015, is being courted due to growing public sentiment in his favour, Abdullahi said.
“We are inviting him because many Nigerians are calling for his return,” he stated, adding that Jonathan is widely regarded as a statesman and a leader who prioritised peace by conceding defeat in 2015.
“Nigerians now realise that many of the issues he was blamed for weren’t his fault. He showed rare statesmanship by refusing to rig the 2015 elections, even though he had the power to do so,” Abdullahi noted.
He disclosed that the former president responded positively to the party’s overtures, indicating he would consult widely before making a decision. One of the conditions reportedly set by Jonathan is being granted an automatic ticket should he choose to run.
