2027: Atiku says his presidential bid is for Nigeria’s future, prays against victory if he deceives citizens

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has said his 2027 presidential ambition is not for personal gain but for the benefit of Nigerians and future generations, adding that he has prayed to God to deny him victory if he ever intends to mislead the people.

Atiku made the remark in a viral video while addressing an audience at a recent event.

“It’s not about me; it’s about your children and everyone. I just want to provide leadership rooted in justice and fairness,” he said. “I always pray that if becoming president will stop me from serving well, doing justice, or advancing our country, then God should not grant it to me. I remain deeply grateful for all He has done in my life.”

Atiku has made several attempts to become Nigeria’s president. He first ran in 1993 during the Social Democratic Party (SDP) primaries, where he finished third. In 2007, he contested under the Action Congress but again placed third in the general election.

He later sought the presidential ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) but lost to former President Goodluck Jonathan, and in 2015, he vied for the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket but was defeated by Muhammadu Buhari. He later secured the PDP ticket in 2019 and 2023 but lost both elections to Buhari and Bola Tinubu, respectively.

In 2025, Atiku defected from the PDP to the newly formed coalition party, the African Democratic Congress (ADC), where he is now among the leading contenders for the party’s 2027 presidential ticket, alongside former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi and ex-Labour Party candidate Peter Obi.
