2027: ADC Will Field Candidate to Unseat Tinubu – Dino Melaye

Former Kogi lawmaker, Dino Melaye, has expressed confidence that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) will present a strong presidential candidate capable of defeating President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections—despite the party’s mix of prominent political figures.

Speaking during an interview on Politics Today aired by Channels Television on Friday, Melaye emphasized the importance of building a stable and credible platform within the ADC.

“Those of us in the ADC are working towards creating a solid and stable foundation. I strongly believe that this platform will produce a candidate who will unseat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027,” he stated.

However, Melaye clarified that he would refrain from endorsing any presidential hopeful until the party is fully stabilized and holds a transparent convention to elect its flag bearer.

“I’ve made it a personal principle not to discuss any particular candidate or preference until we’ve fully stabilised the ADC and conducted an open, credible convention that will produce a presidential candidate who, by God’s grace, will emerge victorious,” he added.

On July 2, a coalition of opposition politicians—including Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, Nasir El-Rufai, Rotimi Amaechi, and Melaye—publicly backed the ADC as a unified front to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027. The coalition hopes to bring together various political interests under a single platform to dislodge the APC.

Despite skepticism from critics and APC leaders—such as former National Secretary Iyiola Omisore—who argue that internal rivalries may hinder the coalition’s effectiveness, Melaye remains optimistic. He described the ADC as a “national altar call” for Nigerians who are guided by conscience and committed to genuine transformation.

“Why Nigerians should see the ADC differently is because it represents an altar call—just like in church, only those who are truly touched, who have conscience, and are ready to leave darkness for light, come forward. ADC is that national altar call,” he explained.

He acknowledged that the party isn’t perfect but insisted that those joining are united by a shared concern for Nigeria’s future.

“Not everyone in the ADC is a saint, but everyone who has joined is genuinely concerned about Nigeria. We want to live in a country where, when we’re old and toothless, and our grandchildren ask what we did when Nigeria was at the brink, we can proudly say we took action,” he said.

In July, ADC founder Ralph Nwosu formally welcomed former Senate President David Mark and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola into the party. They were introduced as interim national chairman and secretary of the coalition, respectively.
