The Obi of Nnewichi community in Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra state, His Highness, Obi George Onyekaba, the traditional ruler of Nnewichi, today during the “Ezeobuo” family meeting attended by many prominent sons and daughters of Ezeobuo, distanced himself and the Ezeobuo family, which is the largest family in Nnewichi, from the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance- APGA; Mr. Nonso Okafor.
In his opening remarks, Obi George Onyekaba maintained that Nnewichi has a power sharing formular which was instituted by a Political Committee duly set up to harmonize power sharing in Nnewichi. This power sharing formular according to His Highness, Obi George Onyekaba before now, was not in existence and so invalidates the claim in some quarters that Ezeobuo or Okpuno or ward 1, had produced a House member before and that it is now the turn of ward 11 which is comprised of Abubo and Oduda. He further noted that the report of the Committee was duly signed by three out of the four sons/quarters of Nnewichi, which Okpuno is the first, then Abubo, followed by Obiofia and then finally, Oduda, in that order. It is on record that while Okpuno, Abubo and Obiofia signed the report of the Nnewichi political committee, Oduda refused to sign, to which Obi Nnewichi responded that Oduda remains excommunicated till they sign the agreement.
It should be noted that Mr. Nonso Okafor is from Oduda Nnewichi and is the APGA candidate for the House of Assembly race.
Obi Nnewichi therefore regretted that the candidature of Nonso Okafor is an affront on his traditional authority. He further said that Nnewichi will work against APGA and vote against its candidate for going against the agreement of Nnewichi community, on rotation of political offices.
The Chairman of Ngobros; Mr. Humphery Ngonadi, whose son; Dr. Obinna Ngonadi is the candidate of YPP for the House of Assembly contest, spoke extensively on his long but deceitful relationship with APGA. According to the business mogul, he spent so much money building APGA in Nnewi North for years. But the same party which he and his son has served not only denied his son the ticket, but did so in such a manner that is shocking to him. Mr. Ngobros mentioned a member of Governor Obiano’s cabinet who accidentally is also from Oduda Nnewichi, as a major masterminder of his son’s fate in APGA. Mr. Ngonadi noted with certitude that he connived with some stakeholders to sabotage his son’s ambition of clinging the APGA ticket, which he condemned as an affront on Nnewichi sharing formular which starts with Okpuno because of his first sonship, as is with the custom of our people. He noted that although Chief Rapuruchukwu from Oduda was the first person from Nnewichi to be elected to House of Assembly, a historical fact that demolished the claims that Oduda or ward 11 Nnewichi, is being victimized, but consciously kept out of public knowledge.
Speaking further, Mr. Ngonadi mentioned a stakeholder from Obiofia Nnewichi, as another person responsible for Obinna’s lose in APGA. He also said he didnt have the best of relationship with the incumbent House member and that he is convinced that he may have worked against him in the believe that he fought him.
Mr. Ngonadi then went back to governor’s aide he first mentioned, whom he described as the “coordinator” of the sabotage that led to the emergence of Nonso Okafor from Oduda, as the candidate of APGA. According to him, what played out was Oduda Nnewichi’s desperation to usurp the right of the first born son. He maintained that what Oduda did was to rely on their firm grip of APGA Nnewi North politics, to usurp the right of Nnewichi’s first born and Nnewichi’s traditional authority. Recall that the APGA Local Government chairman; Mr. Chike Agwuncha, is from Oduda. Thus, Mr. Ngonadi summarized that the trio of the governor’s aide, who coordinated others, the LG party chairman and the stakeholder before mentioned, sabotaged his relationship with them and the party, only to impose someone from Oduda as APGA candidate.
He then concluded by saying emphatically, that Nnewichi will not allow that and that Ezeobuo specifically, will not vote APGA.
On his part, the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party-PDP, for Nnewi North House of Assembly; Rt. Hon. Barr. Benchuks Nwosu, while sympathizing with Mr. Ngonadi, regretted that APGA has to become so unkind to its own. However, according to the lawyer and former lawmaker, PDP offers a credible alternative which all must embrace. He narrated briefly how he played the major role that saved APGA from extinction during the impeachment of former Governor Peter Obi, which would have led to the death of the party, had the then Speaker been sworn-in as governor. He explained how he used his office to attract projects and government attention in Nnewi to which the hall erupted and clapped cheering him. Hon. Benchuks concluded by saying that it is time to have the best hands in positions of power for effective distribution of democracy dividends.
Dr. Obinna Ngonadi the candidate of YPP on his part, said he has been empowering the less fortunate through his foundation’s scholarship. He wondered why the gap between developed countries and countries like Nigeria are so wide, but maintained that quality education offers great hope in sight. He said he has also drafted a bill to ensure that companies in Nnewi as well as every business in Nnewi gets special recognition commensurate with the taxes Nnewi pay to the state government.
Finally, Barr. Onyeka Osigwe the Independent Democrats-ID candidate for Nnewi North, Nnewi South and Ekwusigo Federal Constituency, spoke on his desire to serve. He noted that it is surprising that in advanced countries, lawmakers are easily reached and they attend to constituents so easily without any iota of disrespect. He then announced his flagoff holding tommorrow.
Similarly, Hon. Chris Azubogu the incumbent House of Rep member sent his greetings to Ezeobuo, through Mr. Ejim, he requested for support in his third term bid, according to him, for the greater good of our people.
The meeting came to an end after an enlightenment session with a staff of UNICEF, on the need for cleanliness to avert deseases such as cholera among others.
