BREAKING: Police Fire Tear Gas At #EndBadGovernance Protesters In Abuja

Peaceful protesters gathered at Eagle Square in Abuja were met with violence as rogue Nigeria Police Force operatives fired tear gas canisters at the crowd.

A video obtained by SaharaReporters, uploaded by ICIR, captures the protesters’ cries of dismay and outrage as they questioned the police’s use of force.

Similarly, tear gas was deployed against demonstrators assembling near the Federal Secretariat in Abuja, escalating the situation from a peaceful protest to a volatile confrontation. The police’s heavy-handed response has marred the otherwise tranquil demonstration.

The protesters had gathered to express their outrage over the crippling hardship, rampant hunger, and ineffective government policies. As they fled from the choking tear gas, they cried out in desperation, ‘Why are you shooting tear gas at us?’ – a question that underscored their peaceful intentions and the excessive force wielded by the authorities.

SaharaReporters previously reported that protesters in the Federal Capital Territory were infuriated when Police Commissioner Benneth Igwe abruptly ordered them to relocate from their peaceful assembly point near the MKO Abiola Stadium to inside the stadium.

The crowd, who had been demonstrating peacefully, responded with defiance and catcalls, refusing to comply with the sudden directive. As of the latest update, the authorities have been unsuccessful in their attempts to forcibly move the protesters into the stadium, despite their efforts.

“We are not obstructing traffic and we are by the side of the stadium. We cannot move into the stadium,” they told the commissioner.
